Manaus (AM) — The Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam) hosted, this Monday (22), the International Meeting on the theme of Ecology combined with the economy, which was attended by representatives from the Global Portal Institute, Nicolas Picat Saridaki , and the specialist in Innovation and Technology and president of the Institute, Lucy Xu.

In an interview with Em Tempo , professor and president of the Institute, Nicolas Picat Saridaki, spoke a little about the experience of bringing together professionals in the field in the middle of the Amazon rainforest.

“Researchers from all over the world arrived to talk about the native stingless bee that is in danger of disappearing, of extinction. Faced with this political, economic and ecological transition that all humanity is going through, there are solutions that exist, and this bee native to the American continent is one. It is very important to join forces”, highlighted Nicolas.

On the occasion, the researcher explained that many professionals in the State have difficulties when marketing products, unlike what happens in foreign countries.

“This bee produces the best honey in the world, few people know, civilizations already use this honey for extraordinary properties, in Malaysia, people are even creating vaccines, Chanel in Paris, is buying honey in Costa Rica for the star producer in recent years years, and here in Manaus, specifically, honey is being produced and these producers have difficulty selling this honey, which should not happen”, said Picat.

Still according to the professional, it is essential to debate the topic, since the stingless bee helps society in several aspects, such as the local economy.

“This bee helps pollination, this bee helps with oxygen issues, helps with food security, allows us to transcend all conflicts. The issue is not the activists' war against economic development, there is no such thing. Economy is how to transform the resource that we have to lose, or lose the minimum”, explains Saridaki.

During the event, the Global Portal Institute highlighted the importance of combining research into native fauna and flora, relating the impact of environmental policies on the most isolated communities in the Amazon and the complex relationship with the environment; promoting the integration of good sustainability practices through a native pollinator, the stingless bee; the feasibility of an unprecedented “silk corridor” model and an international platform that covers Latin America through Southeast Asia.
